It has inspired comparisons to Area 51: a vast three-mile runway in a remote part of the Chinese desert, hundreds of miles from any cities.
The site seems to be expanding now. Satellite images from the commercial company Maxar were distributed to show only about a dozen large concrete buildings under construction near the landing site. The buildings represent a significant change to the airfield, which until now had lacked much in the way of permanent accommodation.
"I think we're seeing a very important facility for China's military space activity, which is growing," said Ankit Panda, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for Space Affairs.
A runway on the edge of China's former Lop Nur nuclear test site appeared out of nowhere in 2016. In 2020, observers believe that China may have landed an advanced "spacecraft".

No one knows exactly what the space plane looks like, but it probably resembles the space shuttle that carries American astronauts into orbit.
"It's certainly not big enough for people to fly," says Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard and Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who monitors satellites and spacecraft.

America has similar space planes, McDowell said. The spacecraft, named X-37b, performs secret missions for the Air Force. McDowell said he believed the X-37b program could be used to test advanced technologies for military satellites.

"It's used as a testing ground, taking experiments into space and then, in many cases, bringing them back and you can fix them and improve them and run them again," he says.
The runway has been quiet except for the landing of China's space shuttle last September. A modular trailer appears off to one side, perhaps the rare temporary accommodation ground crews should have on site.

But new facilities now under construction suggest the runway's role may be expanding. "It's not just 'we're coming here for the weekend,'" McDowell says.

Maxar images, along with images from the commercial company Planet, indicate that construction began in the summer of 2020, around the time of the spacecraft's launch. According to Panda, the buildings are similar to other Chinese military facilities. But it is not known what it is used for. "It could be officers' offices, if it really is a permanent military installation," he says. "Housing is another possibility."
Either way, Panda thinks a giant runway in the middle of the desert might get busy. Its remote location makes it an ideal location for testing top-secret equipment.

"Atmospheric aircraft, high-altitude aircraft, high-altitude drones, potential bombers, other experimental aircraft," he says. "You know the United States could be accused of testing at a site like Area 51."
The Chinese embassy in Washington declined to comment on the site. For its part, Panda says it will keep an eye on new technologies that will be showcased at upcoming military parades. This could give clues as to what the Chinese government is doing with its new desert facility. China is building a base in the middle of nowhere, and it could become the country's version of the secret US Area 51. Off the dusty runway ... into something more mysterious.
Last September, China launched its first unmanned, reusable space plane. The vehicle spent 2 days in orbit before landing on a 3-mile airstrip in Xinjiang. No one knew about the airport before landing.
At least a dozen new buildings have appeared on the base in the past few months, NPR reports. Although the 2021 Google Maps images still don't show the new buildings, if you zoom out from the visible runway, the strip appears to be part of an equilateral triangle that allows for takeoff and, more importantly, landing in three directions.

The new features reported suggest that a base in the middle of nowhere, miles away from any civilization, could be very useful for a country trying to keep its aerospace capabilities secret. Sound familiar?
In the 1950s, the US government established such a base at Area 51, deep in the Nevada desert and adjacent to nuclear test sites. The Pentagon and CIA have tested and flown the U-2 and SR-71 reconnaissance aircraft, the B-2 bomber, and the F-117A stealth fighter at the base. The US used Area 51 to experiment with many other less successful designs, but we may never know about them all.
China, which is racing to join the US in many high-end aerospace categories, could certainly use Area 51. The country is developing a new stealth bomber, the H-20, which is the same crude series as the B-2. (But it may not be as powerful as it sounds.)
The better China can hide the aircraft from its rivals, especially the US. If large, bomber-sized hangars appear at China's Area 51 soon, we'll know something interesting is going on.
