Cleaning Glock 17 - In previous chapters of the Gun Cleaning series, I discussed how to clean guns in relation to AR-15 rifles. Cleaning a semi-auto handgun is the same as cleaning a rifle, except it takes less time because of the smaller gun.
So, my personal cleaning process for general gun cleaning is similar to the process for cleaning rifles like an AR-15, except for the downsizing. In my discussion of how to clean a gun, I will use the Glock 17 (Gen 3) as an example gun. Glock pistols are very popular, so this is a good gun to use for a rally. Additionally, cleaning other semi-automatic handguns will be done in roughly the same way.
Cleaning Glock 17
I broke the Glock into small groups, like I do with the AR-15 for cleaning. But the three component groups of Glock pistols are:

I started by spraying the slide and barrel with MPro-7 gun cleaner. I wanted the MPro-7 to penetrate deep into the bore to loosen dry residue for easier cleaning. While this was going on, I started skating first.
Cleaning the slide is quite simple. I would use a nylon brush to scrub and agitate any dry spots on the slide. I then used a shop towel with the MPro-7 to wipe the inside and outside surfaces of the slide.
That's pretty much it for slides. I do not remove the inside of the slide to clean after the scoop. Unless the gun is wet (eg, water, rain), I would not remove the slide internals for cleaning.
After cleaning the slide, I will proceed to clean the bin. I will brush the bore several times to remove dirt from the bore soil.

After brushing the bore, I would then run through the barrel several times with dry stains (MPro-7) and wet on a penetrating saw tooth, until there was little or no stain left on the parts.
After cleaning the bore, I would clean any dirt on the outside of the barrel, including the barrel cap areas, recoil spring lug area, and chamber area with a nylon brush and shop cloth.
I would then spray the cavity and drill with brake cleaner to remove any residual dirt and gun cleaner.
The last step involves cleaning the frame. I usually don't have to do much in this area. What I want to do is clean the sliders on the frame with a nylon brush and a shop wipe with MPro-7. I will also wipe down all visible surfaces of the trigger group (trigger rods, pushers, housings, etc.). I will wipe the frame surfaces as well as the interior of the magazine with a damp shop towel on the MPro-7.
Cleaning Firearms, Part 4: The How For The Glock
After everything was cleaned, I proceeded to oil the Glock with Slip2000 EWL. I will put a coat of oil on the bore to create a light surface coating to prevent rust. I will clean the bin with a shop towel and Slip2000 EWL. I will also apply a coat of oil to all the inside and outside surfaces of the slider, and add more oil to the slider grooves.
I then reassembled the gun and oiled the barrel cap area, turned the slip ring several times, then wiped the gun with a shop towel to remove excess oil.
Here is my procedure for cleaning a Glock pistol. While this is an article discussing how I clean a gun and is not the only way to clean it, I think the procedures I described are pretty similar to what most gun owners do. Gun owners clean their guns. Pictured in the arsenal is the 9mm GLOCK 17 GEN 4 (L131A1) 9mm pistol... Personnel of all services have been issued this secondary weapon since 2013, replacing the venerable Browning L9A1 after more than 40 years of service. (Source: Defense Imagery/Flickr)
It doesn't take much professional knowledge to clean the Glock. But you need to know how to clean a dirty Glock 17 slide - and not just in general, but your Glock 17 in particular.

There are different variations of the Glock pistol. The standard ones most people think of have rough textures on the dials, knobs and other components. These rifles are easy to handle and maintain so they are often used by police departments, security companies and even hunters who want a rifle that is easy to conceal, easy to load, unload and load.
Solvents and degreasers are much stronger than vinegar solutions, so they will usually clean the gun better. However, they are more likely to peel off some of the coating on your Glock. The vinegar solution will likely damage the coating but is not effective in cleaning the gun. So in short: solvents and degreasers clean guns better, and vinegar protects guns better.
Brake cleaner is a chemical solvent designed to clean out nasty buildup that can build up inside a car's engine. It's pretty rough stuff, but it should clean a dirty Glock 17 slide pretty well.
When cleaning the slider with brake cleaner, be sure to cover your hands and any other exposed part of your body. Remember, if detergent gets on your skin, it can cause a chemical burn.

First, remove any magazines from the gun and make sure the magazine is well ventilated. Next, pour a small amount of brake cleaner onto an old rag. Rub the rag on the slide and other gun parts that can build up on them. Use a fresh part of the rag for the frame, the back of the slide and any other part that is particularly sensitive to chemicals. You may need to use a toothbrush to scrub the corners of the slide.
Hexane solvents are sometimes used to clean car engine parts. It is also a very effective solvent for cleaning dirty Glock 17 slides. When cleaning the slide with hexane, be sure to cover your hands and any other exposed body parts. If any solvent gets on your skin, it can cause burns.

There are different types of solvent gun. Some are made specifically for cleaning guns, while others are designed for cleaning rifles or pistols. Some of the most common solvents are carbon tetrachloride, methyl ethyl ketone, and trichloroethylene. Depending on the solvent, you may need to wear special equipment such as a respirator when cleaning the Glock. Most manufacturers recommend cleaning the Glock with a solvent such as acetone or methyl ethyl ketone.

After you finish cleaning your Glock, don't put the gun down. You should do a quick inspection of the gun and make sure everything is in order. You can even perform basic functional tests, as long as no one is around and you are out of range. If you clean the gun thoroughly, there should be no debris in the firing mechanism. However, you should do a quick check to make sure nothing is blocking the line of fire.
First, make sure the journal is removed. Next, slide the rack and see if dirt comes out of the gun. If so, you'll want to find and remove it before it causes paper jams or malfunctions.

Cleaning a dirty Glock 17 slide can be difficult if you don't know how to handle the job. But with the right cleaning tools and procedures, it's not that difficult. You don't need to clean your Glock every time you use it, but you should do a quick cleaning every few months. If you clean your gun on a regular basis, the chances of a significant build-up of dirt and grime are high.
