Marine Corps Base Barstow - In April 2022, we had the opportunity to visit Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow with a small group from the California Historic Route 66 Association. MCLB Barstow is by no means restricted to the general public, but is accessible by special arrangement. The base is home to a small section of Route 66 now known as Joseph L. Boll Avenue, and in 2021, the Route 66 story will be told with unique signs and Route 66 / Marine Corps road stencils, and a beautiful new was highlighted with the monument.

After a stop at the public affairs office, and a tour of their museum exhibits, which were still being organized, we went to lunch at the Route 66 Cafe on base. We then continued our convoy back to Route 66 where we exited the east entrance and exited the main part of the base. We drove through the town of Daggett on Route 66 to the MCLB Yermo Annex for a tour of the USMC Mounted Color Guard.

The Mounted Color Guard is the only remaining mounted unit of the US Marine Corps, which uses horses provided by the Bureau of Land Management through its Adopt A Horse and Burro program. The unique duties of the Mounted Color Guard include representing the Marine Corps at parades and other formal events around the country. A civilian trainer, Terry Holliday, cares for the animals and teaches the young Marines their duties with the Mounted Color Guard. He was very generous with his time and knowledge, showing us around the facility and telling us about his operations.

As many Route 66 travelers know, there is a long-term closure of a section of Route 66 in California's eastern Mojave Desert. Due to the abundance of questions about the area on the Route 66 Facebook groups, I decided to write a summary of what is being signed for travelers on the affected roads. Our October trip to the Road Runner Retreat provided an opportunity to photograph all the road signs that were put up to keep travelers away from the closed area. Two sections of Route 66 between Needles and Amboy have been closed for several years, and there is no timetable for reopening. Many bridges were washed away in the flood situation and San Bernardino County did not manage to repair all of them because it is a large county with not a lot of funds. After having a chance to photograph all the signs, the source of the traveler's confusion becomes clear: the signs are a hodgepodge of conflicting and often misinformation. A trading post outing over Memorial Day weekend gave us the opportunity to support the Route 66 Co-op, a non-profit group that recently purchased the Painted Desert Trading Post. This long-closed trading post is considered a sort of "Holy Grail" of Route 66 destinations. It is located along an abandoned stretch of Route 66 east of Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. In the 1950s, the business closed for good after the highway was realigned. Its isolation has kept it relatively safe and intact for nearly 60 years. It was virtually inaccessible on private land unless you knew the right people for access, or were willing to cross it a few kilometers down and leave 66. PDTP was used to graze cattle, which increased damage because cattle could run around the building, hit walls, etc. Without action it will not survive.

Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow is a United States Marine Corps supply and maintenance installation located in the Mojave Desert east of Barstow, San Bernardino County, Southern California.

Its mission is to construct and repair ground combat and combat support equipment and support installations on the West Coast of the United States. Today, one of MCLB Barstow's most important facilities is the Marine Corps Logistics Bases Maintenance Cter. The only other facility of its kind is at MCLB Barstow's sister installation, Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany.

The base is located on Interstate 40, 3.5 miles (6 km) east of the city of Barstow. The base is located at the intersection of three major highway systems, I-15, I-40 and SR 58. It is approximately 98 miles from Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms. The base is within 150 miles (240 km) of the two major ports of Los Angeles and San Diego.

The Marine Corps Logistics Base, considered the second largest employer in the Barstow area, became the 28th Marine Corps Depot of Supply for supplies and equipment needed by Fleet Marine Forces in the Pacific Theater during World War II. By the end of World War II, the base had expanded its facilities and, as a result, 2,000 acres (8 km)

In October 1946, land about seven miles east of Neboman Base was occupied by the US Army. In 1954, the commanding general, Marine Corps Depot of Supply, Roy M. Gluck, moved its flag from San Francisco to Barstow. And since then the foundation has grown in stature, strength and size.

In March 1961, MCLB Barstow's importance increased dramatically with the establishment of a depot maintenance activity. In November 1978 the base was Marine Corps Logistics Base to emphasize its broader logistics support mission. In the early 1980s, MCLB Albany and Headquarters Marine Corps coordinated logistics support for the Fleet Marine Force. and worked aggressively to eliminate duplication. As a result, all operational logistics functions were moved to Albany and in January 1990 the Commanding General, Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, was redesignated Commander Marine Corps Logistics Bases. The command was redesignated in 2003 as a result of the merger of Materiel Command MATCOM and Marine Corps Logistics Bases to form Marine Corps Logistics Command (MARCORLOGCOM).
